I had a long break from blogging since I started in 2020 for Kamalayan and my Personal blog. Then last year, when I decided to come back and commit to blogging regularly, AI-generated content was all over the place.
And I had so many questions like, will AI replace blog writers? How will I compete with a robot that produces better content and matter in seconds? Should I just use AI to write for my blogs too?
It raises a lot of questions. And I was really hesitant to start blogging again because I might just waste my time.
Well, it turns out that AI tends to write boring content. It has no creativity, or emotions, and doesn’t have personal experience to share with.
Those are the things that we look for when reading blogs. Even though human writers produce typos and grammar issues, it doesn’t seem to bother us because we understand them. And that’s part of being human.
So I think AI won’t replace blog writers anytime soon. In fact, human blog writers today are more in demand than ever before.
But AI has its rightful place in blog writing.
Now let’s explore more about the role of AI in blog writing and if it can really replace human blog writers.
What is AI-generated content?
AI-generated content is content made by artificial intelligence (AI). With the rise of generative AI, you can easily ask an AI to produce content however you want. You could prompt it to write a blog post, social media post, or landing page copy, or it can even make an image or a video for you.
So when I heard about generative AI like ChatGPT, at first I was hesitant to try. And it creeps me out.
I was like, “Is Skynet really happening now?”.
But then after trying ChatGPT and giving a few prompts, it wasn’t as creepy as I imagined it to be at all.
In fact, it has been useful in assisting me with blog topic ideas, keyword research, and writing an outline. And great at spotting grammar mistakes too.
You can think of it as a bright intern who assists you with repetitive tasks with just a few prompts.
TBH, without the help of ChatGPT and Grammarly, I might still be suffering from writer’s block by not having to write an outline and someone who can check grammar.
Now let’s break down the differences between AI and human writers.
AI vs human writers
There’s no question that an AI can do things a lot faster, correct grammar, optimize for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and be a cost-effective tool for small businesses.
So no wonder why most businesses widely rely on AI nowadays because it may cost you around $100 to hire a writer on upwork to $1500 per post for hiring a skilled one like Elise Dopson. And could save them a lot of time producing long-form blog content.
In fact, a human blog writer would spend 6 hours or more brainstorming blog topic ideas, performing keyword research, writing content, editing, and publishing a blog post.
And that’s a lot of time that could have been better spent in other areas like social media marketing, PPC (Pay-Per-Click), and SEO.
But of course, there are limitations too when using AI. It hasn’t come to a point where it can create human emotions, and it does still produce misinformation, commonly referred to as hallucinations.
And this is where human writers stand out. While we may be slow in writing a blog, we add creativity, share personal stories, understand cultural differences, and produce engaging content in the process.
That’s the kind of blog posts we always look for from our favorite bloggers and look forward to reading.
Blogs are not just for your audiences. It’s also written for yourself.
In fact, one reason that encourages me to start a blog is that it forces me to learn the topic, improves my writing, and helps a lot of people. Plus, I could make money from blogging too.
So there’s self-growth in the process of blog creation when a human writes and doesn’t heavily rely on an AI to write for it.
And when it’s time to hit that publish button? Damn! It just feels great knowing that you put a lot of effort and emotion into crafting that blog.
That’s the kind of content that is worthy of having your name as a byline.
AI role in blog writing
I think AI vs human writers should not be the issue. It’s rather how AI and humans can work together efficiently.
When you let AI do all the heavy lifting, sure will finish your blog much faster. But will you be satisfied with the results? I don’t think so.
You may actually end up spending more time editing it.
AI is a great tool. But only if you use it the right way.
Some writers even tried to write a book fully written by an AI. So how does it work for them? It’s getting worse.
For now, I’ve been exploring different ways to use and benefit from this technology. So if you have better ways of using them, comment down below.
Here are the ways how I’ve been using AI to streamline my blog creation process so far:
Brainstorm for topic ideas
AI like ChatGPT and Gemini, has surfed the entire web. So asking for topic ideas will be a very easy task for them.
I have used them to generate ideas. And it’s best to include your target audience in your prompt.
Example prompt: “List out 10 topic ideas for starting a business. My target audience is busy professionals trying to make more money on the side”
Brainstorm for keyword ideas
Having target keywords incorporated into your blog post is essential for SEO. Because Google and other search engines will have a hard time figuring out what your page is about without having target keywords.
So aside from looking for keyword ideas on Google Search’s autocomplete, why not ask an AI to generate more keyword ideas for you?
Example prompt: “List short tail and long tail keyword ideas for my topic ‘10 Profitable Side Businesses for Busy Professionals’ ”.
After you get the list of keywords, make sure to check its search volume on Google Keyword Planner and keyword difficulty on Ahrefs so you will know if you have a chance to rank for those keywords on Google.
Generate an outline
When I started blogging, I always found myself staring at a blank screen. It’s so stressful.
Just staring at my laptop for hours without writing anything, although I have a lot to say.
And when I was having a hard time thinking of words to write, I was mad at writing and told myself that writing is just for a group of smart people.
I was always frustrated and wanted to give up on blog writing when I experienced writer’s block.
But I believe that I have lots to share that could help and inspire other people. Then I discovered this thing called outline in writing.
So when I started to write with an outline, surprisingly, I could finish writing my blogs faster and with better output!
But you don’t have to write your outline yourself. You can ask an AI like ChatGPT to create one for you:
Example prompt: “Write me an outline for my topic ‘10 Profitable Side Businesses for Busy Professionals. Give word count suggestions for every subtopic for a 1000-word blog post’”.
Correct grammar
Without an AI like Grammarly that checks my grammar, up until now, I wouldn’t have the confidence to publish my blog post in the first place. It’s a great AI tool for spotting any grammar mistakes.
What I like about it is that it doesn’t rephrase the whole article and suggests only those that need some improvement. So those words are still yours.
To use Grammarly, simply sign up and make an account, then you can open it through the browser or download their Google Chrome extension.
Future of AI in blog writing
There are mixed opinions on how people see AI in blog writing in the future.
While AI made a significant impact like losing jobs in different industries, I believe that it won’t replace human blog writers even in many years to come.
Today, humans use AI in a variety of ways for blog writing. Some use it to improve work, while some allow an AI to completely take over their work.
And I don’t see this trend slowing down too soon. More and more AI-generated content will populate the web, while more human writers will be in demand.
But is it a bad thing to rely heavily on AI to generate most of your content? Not necessarily. Google states that AI-generated content won’t negatively impact SEO.
Keep in mind that Google still prioritizes quality content however you produce it.
For human writers, on the other hand, I think it will have a positive impact on content creation.
Because while more AI-generated content populates the web, it produces low-quality and unoriginal content which brings more opportunities for human blog writers.
Final thoughts
AI is changing the way we create content, but it won’t fully replace human writers. And while AI can generate content quickly, it lacks creativity, emotions, and personal experiences that our readers look after.
